Heat rash

Uncomfortable in summer

What is the cause of heat rash?

Heat rash occurs when the ducts of the sweat glands in the skin become blocked by a clog of dead skin cells and bacteria. As a result, the sweat cannot drain away. Depending on how deep the blockage is, a distinction can be made between two different forms: if the surface of the duct of the sweat gland is clogged, clear blisters form which usually do not become inflamed (miliaria cristallina). If the plug is deeper, the sweat produced is pressed into the surrounding tissue and red, inflamed pimples (miliaria rubra) develop.

What are they triggered by?

Heat pimples are typically caused by prolonged sweating and a skin environment that is too moist. This can be the case with a fever, a stay in the tropics or by constantly wearing non-breathable clothing. Newborns who are dressed too warmly are also often affected. Another trigger is the mechanical blockage of the sweat glands by aluminum-containing deodorants or antiperspirants, which suppress sweat drainage.

What are the symptoms?

Depending on the subtype, heat pimples are either small, red and inflamed pimples (Miliaria rubra) or small blisters filled with clear liquid (Miliaria cristallina). The pimples can be colonized by bacteria and then form pus caps. The rash is often accompanied by severe itching and burning.

The right clothes:

In order to prevent heat pimples from developing, a lot of air should get to the skin at high temperatures.

Then the sweat can drain away unhindered and the sweat glands do not clog.

Lightweight cotton or linen clothing is a good choice. Breathable clothing is particularly useful for sports, as it allows moisture to escape and does not accumulate underneath.

In general, clothing that is too tight should be avoided when dealing with this problem.

What to do against heat rash? Our tips for treating heat rash:

Which skin regions are affected?

The face, the torso and all parts of the body covered by clothing, such as the arms and legs, are particularly affected.

Gentle scrubs:

If the skin is too calloused, sweat cannot drain off as well and the sweat glands can become clogged.

An improvement can be achieved with a gentle peeling to slough off dead skin cells.

Fast help through cooling:

Heat rash resolves on its own as soon as a cooler and drier situation occurs on the skin.

This can be achieved by staying in cooler regions or in air-conditioned rooms, by wearing airy and breathable clothing, and by exfoliating to slough off dead skin cells.

Cosmetic products with soothing ingredients:

Rich cosmetic products can overwhelm the skin in hot weather and clog pores. The sweat can no longer drain off as well.

Therefore, look for light formulations with lots of moisture in your products and soothing ingredients such as licorice root, witch hazel, shea butter, aloe vera, avocado oil, jojoba oil and ginkgo biloba.
